Today the kids participated in the Kids HyVee-Hormel triathlon in Omaha. What a great job they did putting this event together for the kids. I think I heard a total of 200+ kids age 6-14. The event took place at the Elkorn community center / high school common grounds that features a nice pool -indoor gym and track. The weather cooperated and broke long enough to get the event off with nothing but wet roads...
After the event the sponsors had a opportunity to give away some Hormel product that included sandwiches, chips, ice cream, bread...they literally gave grocery sacks for all the families to gather an assortment of product to take home. Quite the deal. The culmination was the award ceremony after the kids and parents made their way through the lines.
The swim was staged in the pool, where kids were sent off in intervals starting with the older kids first and making their way to the younger kids. As the kids finished the swim they transitioned outside to the bikes to a closed circuit road that surrounded the school where the the older kids did multiple laps. After completion of their laps they transitioned to the run where they ran to the outdoor track and finished up. The older kids did multiple laps for 1mi. and the youngest kids just running 1/4 mile to the track and finishing up. There were some very competitive kids there that were really into it...including Noah and Abigail. They both had their eye on the top prize...An Apple IPOD for each of the winners in each of the divisions, both male and female.
But it was not to be...Abigail finished 2nd in the 9-11, and Noah 3rd in the 12-14. Both had outstanding races and should be very proud as are their parents. They both ended up with gift cards to Trek Stores of Omaha / High gear which worked out great because they both needed some helmets. Thank you Jay and Kent. It was a very good time and good to see all the kids having a great time accomplishing the triathlon.
I'm thinking to myself why aren't we- USACycling somehow connected to this??? All those kids on bikes. USATriathlon is doing something right!
